Lina Inverse

Lina Inverse, also called the Dra-Mata (Dragon-Spooker) by people ignorant of her hair-trigger temper, is one of the most powerful users of Negru Magic in the Slayers world to date. By the age of seventeen she has so far aided in the downfall of two major demi-gods of darkness, as well as numerous other quests of justice... however, such is the price she pays for her great knowledge.

By the age of fifteen, Lina had already created quite a reputation for herself. Her reputation was so great that she even had fans, or rivals as some might say, one of which tracked down Lina and insisted on traveling with her. This woman's name was Naga. Together the two travelled throughout the countryside, doing odd jobs for people and generally making a living off of vanquishing evil. (Naga's adventures mark the 'Slayers Special' storylines, which are covered in the movies and OVA's.)

For reasons not clear, Naga and Lina parted ways, and later, Lina met Gourry Gabriev. Having conquered the Dragon no Kiba (Dragons' Fang) gang, she found in Gourry a traveling companion. Along the course of their first few adventures together, they gained a few more traveling companions : Zelgadiss, Amelia, Sylphiel, Xelloss, Martina, and Phyria.

Lina is pretty much the antithesis of your traditional anime heroine. For one thing, she's not stacked; she's actually rather diminutive in stature. Gourry and less tactful individuals would call her flat-chested, despite the way she's actually drawn in the anime. (Then again, Amelia's fourteen and still bigger than Lina...) But though she looks small, she could easily out-eat just about anyone else her size; indeed, her zeal for food is the primary motivation for many a quest. (Incidentally, most of the first half of the Slayers Next series has opening scenes in a restaurant of some sort...)

Lina's main motivations would definitely seem to be money and power. She has a strong conscience, fighting for truth and justice, but these are largely latent, often overshadowed by greed. Like the fabled Robin Hood, she steals from bandits, but rather than re-distributing the wealth to the poor, Lina keeps it for herself. She fancies herself as the "beautiful genius sorceress Lina Inverse" who does great deeds for justice, and for a good deal of that she's right, but she's definitely not the shining example of justice Amelia hopes to be. Rather, her main objective seems to be getting all the magical power that she can, and learning as much as possible, to keep anyone else from bothering her.

Strong-willed, not much really deters Lina from her goal, not even her friends. Often times, in order to keep the element of surprise, Lina can be found incinerating both foes and friends in a single blast. Lina often wants the quickest, shortest way to her goals as possible, and slowing down to worry about morality or ethics just gets in the way of that. Most often, she keeps a happy smile on her face, despite whatever is going on - getting depressed slows a person down too, so she figures the best way to get stuff done is to be as cheerful as possible, or at least to seem that way. All in all, Lina's got her own act together; in her mind, it's just everyone else who's got a problem.

When Lina Inverse destroyed the Dragon no Kiba (Dragon's Fang) gang, and was later encountered by a small array of vengeful bandits, Gourry Gabriev jumped in to save her. Though Lina appreciated the offer, she initially opted against accepting Gourry as a bodyguard, but Gourry's big-brotherly nature prevented him from acting otherwise. Gourry, dense as a brick, saw Lina as a younger girl in need of protection, and thus, he offered it.

Gourry is the owner of the most powerful sword known to man, the mysterious Sword of Light. The Sword of Light channels its users intentions into energy, usually taking the form of a gleaming blade of light. Gourry has learned how to utilize the sword's energy in different forms, though, most notably the power of swinging it quickly downwards to form energy beam projectiles.

Gourry is the swordsman of the group, and acts the role very well. He's single-minded in his protection of Lina, and even after helping Lina defeat Ruby-Eye Shabranigdu, he has resolved to follow Lina around wherever she goes. Supposedly, he has nothing better to do, and perhaps still sees himself as her guardian.

Amelia wil Tesla Saillune

Amelia is the daughter of Philionel el de Saillune, Crown Prince of the kingdom of Saillune. Like her father, Amelia is a self-proclaimed Champion of Justice(tm) and is singleminded in her quest for truth, honor, and dignity. Also like her father, she's a complete klutz and has no clue of what IS and ISN'T a true cause for justice. (Ever read Don Quixote?)

Amelia has trained since birth for her cause; once convinced, she isn't easily dissuaded from inflicting her particular flavor of justice on whoever she perceives to be an 'enemy of the people.' She thinks of Lina as a hero - a destructive hero, but nevertheless a hero - and wants to be just like her and every other good hero that comes along. (In episode 17 of Slayers TRY she even gets her chance... scary... )

Amelia gets bored being royalty sometimes - she often follows her father Phil on journeys around the countryside. She often looks for trouble, simply so that she can right it. Whenever scouting out an area, she always includes a quick look for the highest place to stand.

...

Why does she always look for the highest place to stand, you ask? In case the enemy strikes, she wants to be able to strike back with a dynamic, triumphant pose of her own, terrifying the enemy with fear of justice. A lot of times, she ends up falling, too, she's only a young girl after all. In fact, Amelia has the reputation of being one of the clumsiest characters in all of Slayers, topped only by Martina.

Amelia is also a budding sorcerer in her own right. Her specialty is white magic, however she also has reached the highest level of training in Shamanist Spirit magic, a testament to her quick learning time and eagerness to learn. She has even developed a spell or two of her own, most notably the Visfarank spell, which seems to be the glowing manifestation of justice as a pair of boxing gloves. o_O;

Zelgadiss Graywords

When Lina Inverse overthrew the Dragon's Fang bandit gang, one of Zelgadiss' men, Zolf, happened to be stuck inside. And, well, he got incinerated. Needless to say, Zelgadiss was mad. More importantly, though, Lina had gotten a very valuable Orihalcon statue, which was the reason Zolf was there to begin with. Zelgadiss wanted the statue in hopes that it could cure his chimaeric curse.

Only, it didn't quite work out that way. Zelgadiss didn't quite cure himself, even after the whole incident with Rezo, the Red Priest and Ruby-Eye Shabranigdu. So, he's still searching for a cure, hoping to find one of the fabled Clair-Bibles in hopes to cure himself. The curse makes him 1/3 golem, 1/3 demon, and 1/3 human, which makes him impervious to most physical weapon such as swords and buckshot, but not to the physical impact of, say, a cannonball.

Zelgadiss is quite self-conscious about his appearance, almost ashamed of it. In fact, he's a very quiet character all around, only speaking when necessary, and only interested in the shortest path to his cure. He also tends to get embarassed easily wherever the topic of romance is brought up.

Zelgadiss is a superb swordsman, having trained many long years. He often enhances his blade with the Astral Vine spell, one of many Shamanist spells at his disposal. He has more or less mastered the Spirit category of Shamanism, having learned its most powerful spell, the Ra-Tilt, among numerous other spells in other categories.

Filia ul Copt

(Written by Carmen Spray, 6/2001)

A priestess of the Gold Dragons, Filia is sent forth from a temple in the 'outside world' as an emissary of the Dragon race. Her initial mission is to gather a team of heroes to prevent the prophecy of the resurrection of Dark Star from becoming a reality. Initially hoping for the help of Luna Inverse, whom she believed was the most powerful sorceress in the land, Filia was somewhat disappointed to be turned down. Instead, Luna referred Filia to her kid sister, Lina Inverse...

Filia is still quite young as dragons go - she's very tempermental. While she usually sports a quiet, dignified appearance, it isn't hard to get Filia enraged. At such times her dragon's tail tends to pop out and wave about. Filia also keeps a rather large, and rather heavy, mace strapped to her leg just for the purpose of, er... let's say 'punishing' people who irritate her.

Some people have an easier time annoying Filia than others - Xelloss, for example, can often get Filia riled up just by smiling at her. Filia's horrified to learn that Lina keeps association with Mazoku- particularly THAT Mazoku. There is that whole thing about Xelloss singlehandedly exterminating most of the Gold Dragons during the Mazoku War some thousand or so years ago, after all... The Ryuzoku and Mazoku are ancient adversaries, and Filia's instinctive reaction to Xelloss is to curse him and call him 'namagomi' (raw garbage!). For some reason, this slanderous euphemism works surprisingly well.

Besides creative insults, Filia is also skilled in the use of dragon-magic. Her natural form is that of an adolescent dragon, but she has mastered transformation magics that allow her to appear as a human being. As a dragon, she can fly, and has refined her dragons' breath into a finely-tuned blast of pure energy.

Filia has an unnerving air of condescendence, in some cases. She seems to think that her opinion is the only correct one, and that only those who agree with her are making sense. She will listen to intelligently-delivered alternatives, but for the most part once she makes a decision, that's the one that should be adhered to- in her opinion. However, some of this seeming arrogance really has to do with her vast naivete.

Kept ideologically sheltered her entire life, Filia is largely innocent when it really comes down to brass tacks. Unaware of much of the truth of the Gold Dragon races' history, Filia is first stubbornly disbelieving, then shocked and outraged by what she learns along the course of her journey. As she comes to feel great sympathy for Valgarv, the renegade Dragon/Mazoku servant of Gaav, she begins to question her teachings, the righteousness of the Gold Dragons, and even her Elder directly- things are no longer as clear to her as they seemed at the beginning.

There's an old saying that runs: "If you want to make God laugh, tell Him your plans." In Xelloss' case, that saying should read: "If I want to have a good laugh, I'll ruin your plan- then get you to follow mine." Manipulative, secretive, irritating, crazy-making: all of these and many other epithets apply in force to the self-styled "Trickster Priest". It's a warning sign that Xelloss has given himself that title.

Xelloss is a Mazoku, which is bad enough- but he's not just any Mazoku. No, Xelloss happens to be the general-priest of Greater Beast Zelas-Metallium, one of the five demon lords underneath Ruby-Eye Shabranigdu. Created from the astral body of Zelas-Metallium herself (Mazoku can reproduce by splitting themselves, something like single-celled organisms), Xelloss is steeped in his Lord's power- and that's no trifling thing. Most Mazoku Lords have (or had) two primary subordinates- a general, and a priest. Zelas-Metallium, for reasons known only to herself, chose to confecționate only one servant. Effectively this makes Xelloss the single most powerful Mazoku in existence that is not a lord itself.

Most people tend not to trust the main subordinate of a major demon, and rightfully so -- on more than one occasion, Xelloss has doublecrossed those who may have been unwary enough to drop their guard around him and consider him a friend. In fact, he's incredibly skillful at playing one side of a conflict against the other while remaining seemingly 'neutral', all by masterful (ab)use of information. Anyone who willingly follows Xelloss' hints and clues probably deserves the trouble that inevitably follows.

Information is Xelloss' most precious possession; he doesn't share what he knows freely. He might tell a story, but the parts he leaves out of the story are probably a lot more important than the ones he tells. Most direct questions put to him and any questions he doesn't feel like answering are met with a tsk-tsk waggle of his forefinger, and his catchphrase, "Sore wa himitsu desu," or, literally, "That is a secret." The exception to this seems to be that he'll allow Lina to browbeat hints out of him- but there seems to be a hidden agenda there too.

It could be as simple as the fact that Xel's a glutton for punishment, seeking to hurt, and to be hurt. Mazoku feed on pain and misery like humans consume food; Xelloss has a ... considerable appetite. He has an uncanny grasp of human nature, no respect for boundaries, and a smart-aleck tongue; he looks good in Chinese dresses (don't ask), and has little if any fear of ANYTHING. Normally, he wears a happy smile and his eyes are closed- but when those eyes glint open, you'd best be prepared for trouble. All too often though he tends to shuffle off to Buffalo the moment a situation gets serious.

Funny thing is, he has almost no weaknesses, so it's not that he can really be hurt in combat. Damage means little - he can regenerate fairly quickly, and physical damage is nigh irrelevant because his 'body' isn't really anything like a human's. Unlike Filia or Zelgadis, Xelloss' appearance is malleable, created wholecloth from his magic powers. (Even his clothes and staff are really part of his 'body'!) His true form remains largely in the astral side. Xelloss is also resistant to most magics and can even shrug off attacks from other Mazoku, simply because they aren't powerful enough to hurt him. The nature of Xelloss' resistance is not quite known, but it's a fact no Mazoku can be killed by any power lesser than itself.

Above all else, Xelloss is 100% loyal to his master. Zelas-Metallium has a secret agenda, and Xelloss does a very good job of sticking to it, as well as keeping it secret. No one is quite sure of what 'the plan' is, and Xelloss sure isn't revealing it. Occasionally it suits his purposes to cross paths with Lina and her adventurers, and even to help them now and then... but as Xelloss himself reminds them, "Never forget I am a Mazoku." Someday, the trickster just might turn into a serious foe...

One of the two 'hired' by Christopher to assassinate his brother Phil, Kanzeil is a rather shady character from the get-go. He has mastery over his powers of teleportation, and usually opts to "disguise" himself in the form of a blue-skinned humanoid.

Keith
First Appearance: Slayers NEXT 16

A longtime rivalry with Ruud leads the two to ask for players in a sport which bears a remarkable resemblance to tennis. Indeed, who better for Keith to pull in as a 'ringer' in the sport than the famous tennis star Martina Zoana Mel Navratilova? (Okay, maybe she's NOT a tennis star in the Slayers world, but what difference does it make?)

Kerel
First Appearance: Slayers TRY #17

Kerel, a human, is deeply in love with Laila, a fish-person.

Kira
First Appearance: Slayers NEXT 10

When Lina's magic fails her, she hears rumors of a magic shop far, far away from Saillune which specializes in healing such ailments. She wasn't expecting to find a little girl named Kira working the cauldron, though...

Kyanii (Canny?)
First Appearance: Slayers Rarisim #1 (story)

I don't have a clue where Kyanii comes into the storyline - see the Slayers DX book for more information.

Laia Einberg
First Appearance: Slayers GREAT

Saved by Lina and Naga, she is compelled to take them home with her. Daughter of Garia and sister to Huey, she's the only member of the family who works, so she spends a good deal of time lamenting her ill fortune.

Laila
First Appearance: Slayers TRY #17

Laila is deeply in love with Kerel, a human.

Lark
First Appearance: Slayers Royal

Lark is the boy who shows up in Slayers Royal - apparently, he's trying to get the pendant of Lezariam back, because it can be used to resurrect Ruby-Eye Shabranigdu, generally considered a 'bad' thing. He has a sister named Rynnea who's been abducted, as well.

Lord of Nightmares
First Appearance: ???

The Lord of Nightmares, who commonly takes the form pictured, normally exists as a "lagoon" upon which the four staves of the world rest. The Lord of Nightmares is the creator of the four worlds (see the Background: World page for more information) and rules over all.

Luna Inverse
First Appearance: ???

Luna is Lina's older sister. It seems that when the two were growing up in Zefielia, times were tough, so Luna took a part-time job waitressing. Lina thought she would help out by making "projections" of her sister Luna taking a bath, for money. Luna found out, and, well, let's just say Lina's trusted her judgment ever since. Luna's also proclaimed to be much more powerful than Lina, according to Filia in TRY #2, owing to the fact that she is the only known Knight of Ceiphied
Raina Sanverse
First Appearance: Slayers Aparte #2 (story)

Raina Sanverse is the real name of a girl whose reputation precedes her. Unfortunately, it precedes her in the name of Lina Inverse instead of her own.

Randy
First Appearance: Slayers TV 11

Crown Prince Philionel's OTHER brother, Randy tried to take him out too. Isn't Saillune such a loving, nurturing environment?

Side note: The above picture is the way Randy was illustrated in the short stories, NOT the way he was illustrated in TV episode 11. Deosebit thanks to Jussi Nikander for pointing this little tidbit out. ^_^ )
Reika
First Appearance: Slayers TRY #18

Reika is the Pink warrior of the specially-trained but fatally flawed Peaceman group.

Raoul Kremintz
First Appearance: Slayers Singular #3 (story)

Yet another character I only know of because of Slayers DX.

Raymia
First Appearance: Slayers Special #2 (story)

Surprise! This character came from Slayers DX as well.

Remii
First Appearance: Slayers Special #3 (story)

OK, I do know a bit more about Remii. She loves swords, having given each of them a particular name. She also has a tendency to go into sadistic overkill when she gets in a battle...

Red Priest Rezo
First Appearance: Slayers TV 3

The Red Priest Rezo was one of the Five Wise Men of the Age; born blind at birth, he wandered the countryside performing small miracles of the faith. Later, it seems that his faith wavered a bit more towards the dark side; Zelgadiss claims him to be both his great-grandfather and his father. That, and the fact that Ruby-Eye Shabranigdu was sealed within Rezo's eyes, makes him a little bit more evil by the time Lina meets up with him.

Riol
First Appearance: Slayers Special #2 (story)

Whoa, big shocker. I don't know anything about Riol. ^_^;

Rodimus
First Appearance: Slayers TV 3

Rodimus was one of Zelgadiss' henchmen, and followed him till his early demise. Rodimus was very loyal, and persevered through every situation given him, but had a nasty habit of falling asleep at critical moments.

Rowdy Gabriev
First Appearance: Slayers : The Motion Picture

Rowdy was around when the island of Mipross wasn't yet an island. He met up with a girl named Mellyroon and they started seeing each other. They were going to go to a festival, when the island was attacked by Joylock, and the Fairy Souls of the elf village wished for the peninsula to separate from the mainland. An indeterminate time later, Rowdy shows up again in a certain sorceress' dreams...

Rubia
First Appearance: Slayers NEXT 5

The beloved of Halshifom, Rubia had been killed in one of the scientist-mage's experiments. Halshifom keeps her body in stasis in hopes that one day he can find a way to resurrect her.

Ruud
First Appearance: Slayers NEXT 16

Ruud enlists the awesome tennis might (cough cough) of Lina Inverse in a fight to the finish against his greatest rival, Keith! Only, it turns out that they're actually father and son...

Rynnea
First Appearance: Slayers Royal

Rynnea is an elf, and Lark's sister. She gets abducted by Mossman before the opening of the game.
Sarina
First Appearance: Slayers RETURN

Sarina's village is the site for the rule of Galev's campaign. She's fairly skilled with the sword, and she doesn't know any magic, which seems to place her in the minority in the Slayers world...

Sarina's father
First Appearance: Slayers RETURN

Sarina's father doesn't know any magic either, but he just flat-out ROCKS at swordfighting.

Shutaindolf
First Appearance: Slayers Special #2 (story) / Slayers Excellent #1

Schteindolf is an ancient vampire who demands a periodic tribute of human lives from a nearby village.

Seigram
First Appearance: Slayers NEXT 4

Seigram proves to be a constant source of annoyance for Lina and the others, showing up periodically to make life difficult for her. I'm not sure as to Seigram's true motivations, though it does seem that he's out to help deliver Lina to Fibrizo, as most of the other Mazoku are.

Sera
First Appearance: Slayers TRY #9

The daughter of one of the ruling houses in the "New World,", Sera knows of the family treasure and helps Lina bring it to a secluded island, where she plans to meet up with her friend Marco.

Ruby-Eye (Lord of Darkness) Shabranigdu
First Appearance: Slayers TV #8

The sole source of misery and negative emotions in the Slayers world, Ruby-Eye Shabranigdu is the superior of all other Mazoku. Defeated long ago by the Dragon King Ceiphied, Ruby-Eye was split into seven parts and scattered across the plane. A thousand years ago, one of these parts was resurrected by the Demon King of the North, but was defeated again by Ceiphied with the help of the Sea Dragon King Aqua. When Ruby-Eye awoke again, sealed within the eyes of the Red Priest Rezo, Lina Inverse was there to defeat him. Ruby-Eye's followers still attempt to resurrect him whenever they can, but with Lina around, it might be a while...

Shadow-Lina
First Appearance: Slayers Special #3 (OVA)

When a beam from the Shadow Reflector hit Lina, it created an exact duplicate of her. Well, exact in every regard except her personality, which was reversed. So instead of a violent, tomboyish and deceitful girl like Lina, we get a peace-loving, girlish and completely nieve counterpart.

Shadow-Naga
First Appearance: Slayers Special #3 (OVA)

When the Shadow Reflector hit Naga, though, it created a girl who was paralyzed with unconfidence about her appearance and actions.

Sylphiel Nels Rada (also Shillfiel)
First Appearance: Slayers TV #18

Sylphiel, a white mage from Sairaag, has an intense crush on Gourry for some reason, stemming from an event in his past. Check out sylphiel.shtml for more info.

Tarim
First Appearance: Slayers NEXT 3

Tarim and Daymia start a little war in the city; Tarim hires Lina and Gourry to help him out. Doesn't work though...

Thornfort
First Appearance: Slayers Gorgeous

A sucker for cute girls, Thornfort is another of Marlene Calvert's Four Lords of Heaven.

Tsuposky
First Appearance: Slayers TRY #16

Tsuposky is the name of the spirit trapped within an arcane pot, aboard a ghost ship.

Valgarv (also Vargarv, Valgaav)
First Appearance: Slayers TRY 2

Once Lina and the crew venture out into the "new world", their new opponent turns out to be Valgarv. Though there's a lot more than meets the eye; read more about Val at valgarv.shtml.

Volfied (also Vorfeed)
First Appearance: Slayers TRY (?)

Volfied is the primary deity of the plane from which his subordinate Armace comes. Volfied's power directly opposes that of Dark Star.

Vrumugun
First Appearance: Slayers TV #12

Hired to bring Lina and Gourry back to Sairaag, Vrumugun is a fairly competent, if deathly quiet, sorcerer. He also seems to have this uncanny ability of coming back to life...

Zahaad
First Appearance: Slayers RETURN

Zahaad is one of the few members of the Xain organization headed by Galev. A fairly good swordsman, he doesn't seem to be all that bright and just, basically, a flunkie.

Zangulus
First appearance: Slayers TV #13

Zangulus is the wielder of the mystic Howling Sword. Zangulus is a mercenary swordsman, insisting on challenging Gourry Gabriev at every opportunity. Even though he is often against the party, he has a strong sense of honor and often ends up helping them.

Zazan
First Appearance: Slayers NEXT 10

Zazan is a minor Mazoku who provides a bit of a nuisance for Lina and Martina.

Greater Beast Zelas-Metallium
First Appearance: (?)

Zelas-Metallium, residing on Wolf Pack Island, is one of the five subordinates to Ruby-Eye Shabranigdu. Unlike the other four, she has given her Priest, Xelloss, the additional military capabilities of a General. Her intentions and motivations are not quite clear, but her war with the other Mazoku shows no sign of abating any time soon.

Side note: Zelas-Metallium, like most Mazoku Lords, commonly uses one of two forms, a beast form and a humanoid form. Pictured is the beast form.
Zelgadiss Graywords
First Appearance: Slayers TV #2

Zelgadiss is a chimaera - in his case, 1/3 Mazoku, 1/3 golem, and 1/3 human. Find out more about him at zelgadiss.shtml.

Zolf
First Appearance: Slayers TV 2

When Lina shows up at the Dragon's Fang to claim her treasure, she fireballs the place - with Zolf in it. Known for a short time as the 'Mummy Man,' Zolf eventually joins Lina's side...

Zoom
First Appearance: ???

I don't have a CLUE where Zoom comes from, there seems to be even less information on him than there are about the other characters I saw in Slayers DX...

Zorom
First Appearance: Slayers TV 7

Zorom is the first true Mazoku we encounter in the Slayers anime, and it is from his conversation with Rezo that we learn of the Mazoku hunger for human fear and hatred
