Lucia Nanami (七海 るちあ, Nanami Ruchia?) Voiced by: Asumi Nakata is the protagonist of the anime and manga Mermaid Melody Pichi Pichi Pitch and its second anime season Mermaid Melody Pichi Pichi Pitch Pure. She is the mermaid princess of the North Pacific Ocean. She is the keeper of the Pink Pearl. Lucia surfaced onto the human world to look for her pearl that she had entrusted to a boy seven years ago. When she succeeds, she accepts the task of uniting the seven mermaid princess of the seven nations of the seas and defeating the sea monsters.
Lucia is a very cheerful person and has a very kind heart. Her idol form is Pink Pearl Voice. She has two image songs form both seasons of the anime: Splash Dream and Mother Symphony.
Lucia first appeared as a young mermaid seven years ago before the story started. One night when she ventured onto the sea surface and encountered a cruise ship celebrating a festival, she met a young boy. It was love at first sight. But before anything else happened, a giant wave crashed onto the ship and the boy fell into the icy ocean. Lucia went after the boy without a second thought. She saved the boy using her precious mermaid tear, shaped like a pearl. The boy kept the mermaid tear ever since.
As the story begin, Lucia surfaced on land again, but this time is to retrieve her pearl. Thirteen is considered adult age in the mermaid world, but a mermaid princess without her pearl cannot receive her full power. With adorable pet penguin, Hippo, Lucia disguised herself as a human girl name Lucia Nanami. She works and lives with her big “sister” Nikora in a hotel named “Pearl Piari” which was owned by Madame Taki. Both women are considered important at the mermaid world.
Lucia had successfully retrieved her pearl, but at the same time, she had learned that there is a new clan of sea monsters that had been trying to capture the seven mermaid princess of the seven nations, called the Panthalassa. In doing so, they had turned the marine world into chaos. Lucia accepted her new task of gather the seven mermaid princesses in order to revive the sea goddess Aqua Regina and defeating the sea monsters.
While on land, Lucia meet a surfer-dude who looked awfully like the boy from seven years ago named Kaito. Lucia could not believe it at first, but he most certainly is the boy who had Lucia’s pearl for seven years and never forget about this mermaid ever since. Lucia and Kaito have a trouble relationship throughout the first season of the anime, mainly because that the mermaid Lucia is unable to reveal her human identity to Kaito. It is said that a mermaid who willfully reveal her identity will turn into sea foam. Lucia is desperate that Kaito is unable to figure out her human identity after she asked him to search for her in her mermaid form. Kaito was more troubled with his feelings about the human Lucia and the mermaid Lucia, whom he thought were two different people.
Lucia has a very cheerful personality. She has a good and simple heart, and a simple mind. But she also have courage and termination in abundance. She would help anyone that is in trouble. She is also very friendly, especially when she made a “friendship ring” for Rina although she hardly knew her in episode 3. However, she is also insecure sometimes, and gets nervous whenever she sees some other pretty girls around Kaito.
Lucia shares a strong bond with her friends and fellow mermaid princesses. She met the first other mermaid princess, Hanon, in episode 1. Hanon and Lucia became quick friends, partly because of their similar personality. As for Rina, the green mermaid princesses, it was a hard beginning due to Rina's cold and distant exterior. However, as time passes, the three became close friends. They are always there to defeat the Dark Lovers, and they help each other whenever it is possible.
In the second season of the enemy, Lucia has a rival for Kaito. And because of the upcoming danger, Kaito gave up his memory in order to protect the ones he loves. Lucia has to deal with the harsh facts that Kaito no longer remembers his precious mermaid, the enemy she has to face is very powerful, and she has to win Kaito over the girl who saved him and developed a crush on him.

Hanon Hōshō (宝生 波音, Hōshō Hanon?) Voiced by: Hitomi Terakado is the Mermaid Princess of the South Atlantic Ocean. She is the keeper of the Aqua Pearl. Hanon is very girly, loves to shop and do makeup. Despite joking around a lot, Hanon is pretty smart and talks sense into Lucia on more then one occasion.
Hanon first meets Lucia at their school, where they become fast friends. Hanon falls for the music teacher at school, Taro Mitsuki. She adoringly refers to him as "Taro-chan".
Towards the end of the first anime season, it is revealed that Sara once loved Mitsuki in the past. He desperately tries to get Sara to understand the reason he left her. Hanon is very sad, but understands that Mitsuki loves Sara. She tears a bit, but understands what is best for her country and helps Mitsuki tell the truth to Sara.
Later, after Gaito is sealed back in his castle, Mitsuki decides to fly to Germany to study music. Before he leaves, he gives Hanon a composition by him, titled "Goddess of Peace: A Devotional to the Aquamarine Mermaid", making Hanon happy as can be. Rina Tōin (洞院 リナ, Tōin Rina?) Voiced by: Mayumi Asano is one of the central characters in the anime and manga Mermaid Melody Pichi Pichi Pitch and its second anime season Mermaid Melody Pichi Pichi Pitch Pure. She is the mermaid princess of the North Atlantic Ocean. She is the keeper of the Green Pearl. Rina is a person who dwells on the past. She seemed to be cold and distant at first glance; but as the series progress, she began to open up and showed a more friendly and gentle side of her.
Rina is the third mermaid princess to appear in both the anime and the manga. Her idol form is Green Pearl Voice. She has two image songs form both seasons of the anime: Star Jewel and Piece of Love.
Rina is first introduced in episode 3 as a transfer student in Lucia and Hanon’s class. At first glance, Rina seemed to be a person difficult to get along with because of her cool and distant attitude. However, she had a reason for that. Rina is the princess of the North Atlantic Ocean. Not long ago, her homeland was destroyed by the sea monsters. She met up with the mermaid princess of the Arctic Ocean, Noel, to escape together. However, they were attack by Gaito and one of his Dark Lovers, Yuri. It was Noel who sacrificed herself by throwing herself into Yuri’s attack in order to give Rina a chance to escape. Rina experienced difficult emotions from this event, and she arrived on land to seek revenge.
As the series progress, Rina showed a more gentle and friendly side of her after befriended with Lucia and Hanon. She is beautiful, elegant, and very mature compared to Lucia and Hanon. Rina is also very independent. She lives on her own in a small house instead of living with Lucia and Hanon at Pearl Piari. As she spends more time with Lucia and Hanon, she becomes very close to them, and showed a more cheerful and fun side of her. Despite her cold and mature exterior, she still does some silly things with Hanon and Lucia sometimes, such as the Mermaid Contest in episode 21.
While Hanon and Lucia quickly found love interests on land, Rina remained unmoved why boys approach her. Her reason is simply that she is “not looking for a boyfriend” [3] However, she has grown quite found of Kaito overtime, despite the little misunderstanding she had with him the first time they met due to Kaito’s physical resemblance of Gaito. But knowing that Kaito is really Lucia’s guy, Rina knows better not to touch him.
In the second season of the anime, Rina received a love interest, the motorbike-driving boxer, Masahiro Hamasaki. Rina was shy and slow about confessing her feelings. However, when she left him for a ceremony, she starts to miss him.[4] The second season mainly deals with Rina’s difficult yet passionate relationship with Masahiro.

Caren (かれん, Karen?) Voiced by: Ema Kogure is a fictional character in the manga and anime series Mermaid Melody Pichi Pichi Pitch.
Caren is the princess of the Antarctic Ocean. Using her pearl, she can transform into Purple Voice.
Caren is the Princess of the Antarctic Ocean. Using her Purple Pearl, she can transform into Violet Pearl Voice. Caren is actually Noel's twin sister (the slightly younger twin, to be exact). Noel and Caren were born at the same time and at the same moment, even though they were born at opposite poles of the Earth. Despite the fact that they consider themselves to be twins, however, they have never actually met each other face-to-face. Still, Caren obviously cares a great deal about Noel. When she hears that Noel has been captured by Gakuto, Caren vows to rescue her, no matter what.
Caren is a difficult character to understand. She first appears in chapter 09, in her human form, essentially stalking Lucia and company. She also seems to have a mysterious interest in Mitsuki-sensei.
At first, even though Caren will not fully reveal herself to the other three mermaids, she still appears willing to help them out from afar. In chapter 10, she appears in her mermaid form to return Lucia's microphone to her (it had been knocked out of her hand by one of Izuuru's attacks). In the end, however, when Caren finally does reveal herself as Purple Pearl Voice, she also finally states that she has no intention of becoming friends with the other mermaids. She blames them (especially Rina) for Noel's capture. "I can't believe in any of you," she tells them. And she intends to rescue Noel by herself. Unfortunately, however, things don't exactly work out the way that Caren had planned.
In chapter 12, Caren states that she is eighteen years old.

Noel (ノエル, Noeru?) Voiced by: Ryoko Nagata - Mermaid Princess of the Arctic Ocean and keeper of the deep blue (i.e. 藍色, ai-iro) pearl. She helped Rina escape from the sea monsters, which led to her capture. She is calm, gentle, caring, and studious (as she sometimes wears glasses on land later in the second season of the anime). Her idol form is Ai-iro (Deep Blue) Pearl Voice.
In the third volume of the English manga, ai-iro was translated as indigo, but deep blue makes more sense regarding the character's colour scheme; the colours may be based on the rainbow, but Lucia is pink, not red. It is yet to be seen whether this will be corrected.
Some refer to Noel's name as Noelle, because originally Noel is a male name, while Noelle is the female form, but the official English translation as well as the official Japanese romanization uses Noel

Sara (沙羅, Sara?) Voiced by: Kana Ueda - Mermaid Princess of the Indian Ocean and keeper of the orange pearl. She joins Gakuto in his quest to take over the marine world after an incident bestowed her a dark power, turning both her orange hair and her orange pearl pitch black (though her eyes stay orange) and destroying her own kingdom. That incident was a proposed rendezvous with Tarō, her secret human lover, in which he never showed up. (In the manga, he actually arrived before, but Sara's guardian found out about the relationship and insisted that he leave, convincing Sara that he had abandoned her.) In a fury, Sara unleashed a wave of power, destroying her kingdom and causing the wave which killed Kaito's parents and from which Lucia saved Kaito. In the manga, her villain name is Black Pearl Voice and she transforms into an idol in a black dress reminiscent of a diva. However, in the anime, she does not transform until she turns good, and instead has the power to sing offensively in a humanoid, amphibious form like the villains and mermaid idols, with or without her E-pitch. In the end, she decides to join the other mermaids as is her duty. She, herself, seals the gate to Gakto's castle in the book because it's her duty and she unsealed the gate after her kingdom was destroyed. In the TV show, Aqua Regina seals the gate and Sara goes with Gaito because she loves him. She also appears in the second season as a spirit, informing Lucia of the future Orange Pearl Voice and offering her assistance where she can. Sara is also seen singing with the other mermaid princesses in the very last episode of Mermaid Melody Pichi Pichi Pitch Pure.

Others
Gakuto (楽斗/ガクト, Gakuto?) Voiced by: Daisuke Kishio - the leader of the sea monsters who is bent on taking over the marine world. He is always depicted drinking wine, and wearing black. His resemblance to Kaito made the latter a subject of initial ire by Rina. He is known in the anime as Gaito (ガイト). (There is no definite reason for the name change, but one obvious reason is to distinguish him from J-Pop star Gackt, whose name is spelt the same way in katakana. In the Del Rey manga translation, his name is spelled Gackto in order to emphasize the comparison between the character and the singer.)
The Dark Lovers (ダーク・ラバーズ, The Dark Lovers?) - Gakuto's four female followers who serve him in exchange for his love for them. There are composed of the following:
Izuru (イズール, Izūru?) Voiced by: Sayori Ishizuka - The most mature of the four, she has the power to control waves and marine beasts and has the ability to făurite dragons from water. She is also the most obsessed with winning the heart of Gakuto.
Eriru (エリル, Eriru?) Voiced by: Yuki Matsuoka - The one with the multiple personality disorder. At one phase, she is cute, and acting as if she were antsy (spinning around and never saying any natural speech). In another phase she can speak correctly and is more observant of her surroundings. In her third phase, when threatened (or when she spins around), she becomes scary, her eyes glow red, and she changes her voice accordingly.
Maria (マリア, Maria?) Voiced by: Sanae Kobayashi - The one closest to Gakuto in terms of love. She is also very cruel at times, and sometimes seems to see Gakuto more as a boy-toy than a love prospect. She has the power to make and/or manipulate ice and snow.
Yūri (ユーリ, Yūri?) Voiced by: Chieko Honda - the youngest-looking of the four. She has the ability to control people and objects, especially with the use of her music and, if any, a nearby piano. Although Yūri is loyal to Gakuto, his continued treatment of her as a child leads her to a star-crossed relationship with Hippo, i.e. his human form.
Negru Beauty Sisters (ブラック・ビューティー・シズターズ, Black Beauty Sisters?) - composed of the red-wearing older sister Sheshe (シスターシェシェ, Shisutā Sheshe?, Voiced by: Miki Tsuchiya) and the blue-wearing younger sister Mimi (シスターミミ, Shisutā Mimi?, Voiced by: Noriko Shitaya). Gakuto hires them after the Dark Lovers' failed attempts to capture the Mermaid Princesses. These two have the ability to sing tunes more powerful than the songs the Mermaid Princesses themselves sing, although in the anime and the second arc of the manga, the Princesses manage to get strong enough to overpower them. Though Gakuto turned them back to their autentic forms (two angler fishes), they were resurrected in the second season. Their group name is usually shortened by fans to BBS.
Many fans think that the name "Black Beauty Sisters" is just a stage name, as Mimi and Sheshe seem to be in love, and sister can mean other things that would apply to the two, such as sharing the same origin
